I remember when we saw him at the March show in Las Vegas my friend and I looked at each in disbelief. Garcia was bloated, green and bilious. It was shocking how ill he appeared.

I agree that fall '83 was fairly consistent. Nearly all of 1984 was consistently inconsistent. The big exceptions, imo, were those back-to-back runs in July at the Greek and, to a lesser extent, Ventura. Second set for 7/15 is still one of my most listened-to '80s Dead.
